This Privacy Policy explains how Movi ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you use the Movi mobile app and movitaste.com (together, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
We collect information that you provide directly to us, including:
• Account information (username, email address or phone number, password)
• Profile information (photo, bio, and preferences)
• Movie and TV show rankings, reviews, and watchlist data
• Custom lists you create
• Social interactions (follows, comments, likes, shares, blocks, mutes, and reports)
• Data you choose to import from Letterboxd (ratings and watch history from a CSV export you upload)
• Subscription and purchase information, including plan type and transaction identifiers from the App Store or Google Play
• Usage and analytics data, such as screens viewed and features used, collected via PostHog
• Device information, including device type, operating system, and app version
• Crash and error diagnostics
• Push notification tokens, if notifications are enabled
Movi uses artificial intelligence — including OpenAI's models — to power several features. When you use these features, relevant data (such as a list request you type, or your ranking history) is sent to our AI provider to generate a response:
• Smart List Generation — creates a custom list from a natural-language description you provide
• Personalized recommendations — suggests movies and shows using your ranking history, and in some cases your friends' ratings as context
• Recommendation explanations — AI-written summaries of why a title was recommended to you
• Film Personality — an AI-generated summary of your taste, built from your top and bottom-ranked titles, genres, directors, and decades
AI-generated content is produced automatically without human review and may be inaccurate or unexpected; it is provided for entertainment and discovery purposes only. We also use non-AI, rule-based scoring (a "taste profile" built from your ranking history) to power parts of Discover and recommendations — this does not involve a third-party AI provider.
If you choose to find friends on Movi, we use the phone number you provide and, if you grant permission, your device's contact list, solely to match you with other Movi users and power friend suggestions. We do not sell your phone number or contacts, and we do not contact people on your behalf without your action. You can decline contacts access at any time in your device settings.
We use the information we collect to:
• Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
• Power AI-based and algorithmic personalization and recommendations
• Display your rankings and activity to your followers
• Send notifications and respond to your questions
• Process and manage subscription purchases
• Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, and violations of our Terms of Service
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:
• With your consent
• To comply with legal obligations or valid legal requests
• To protect the rights, property, or safety of Movi, our users, or the public
• With other users, when you make content public or interact socially (rankings, reviews, follows, comments, likes)
• With service providers who process data on our behalf, including OpenAI (AI features), Supabase (database hosting), Vercel (app hosting), PostHog (analytics), The Movie Database/TMDB (movie and TV metadata), Apple and Google (sign-in, push notifications, and subscription billing), and our push notification infrastructure
We retain your account information and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we permanently delete your profile, rankings, reviews, lists, and other personal content from our production systems within 30 days, except where retention is required to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements. Encrypted backups are purged on a rolling cycle.
We implement appropriate security measures to protect your personal information, including encryption and secure authentication. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. If we become aware of a security incident affecting your personal information, we will notify affected users and applicable regulators as required by law.
You have the right to:
• Access your personal information
• Update or correct your information
• Delete your account and all associated data
• Opt out of certain communications
• Request a copy of your data

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion or correction of your information, opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and limit the use of sensitive personal information. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. If you are located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, we process your information based on your consent, our performance of our agreement with you, and our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Service. You have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, or port your data, to object to certain processing, to withdraw consent at any time, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Movi is based in the United States and processes and stores information there. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.
Movi provides tools to report, block, and mute other users and their content. When you submit a report, we review the reported content or account and may take action, including content removal, warnings, or account suspension or termination, consistent with our Terms of Service. We retain reports and related activity to investigate abuse and comply with legal obligations.
Our app uses third-party services including:
• OpenAI (AI-generated recommendations, list suggestions, and Film Personality)
• The Movie Database (TMDB) (movie and TV show data)
• Supabase and Vercel (cloud hosting and database services)
• PostHog (product analytics)
• Apple and Google (sign-in, push notifications, and subscription billing)
These third parties have their own privacy policies governing their use of information.
Movi is not intended for children under 13 years of age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Age eligibility is currently self-attested when you agree to our Terms of Service; we do not use a separate age-verification mechanism. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it. Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided us with personal information may contact us at movitaste@gmail.com.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app or by email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
