Memento

2000 · R · 1h 53m · Mystery, Thriller · Directed by Christopher Nolan

Synopsis

Some memories are best forgotten.

Leonard Shelby is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty of locating his wife's killer, however, is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of short-term memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.

Great idea, unfortunately, not in the hands of Nolan.  I think this idea would’ve been perfect for Ryan Coogler but no Christopher Nolan styled simply does not fit this type of messaging. Christopher Nolan’s characters are famously, empty rapid and stereotypes and shells of themselves. He is notoriously bad at writing characters this movie realize heavily on characters and honestly, you can’t bring yourself to care about any single one of them. It’s a very interesting idea for a film. It’s a great plot  not not a good story because a good story needs well written characters. The Nolan glaze has gone too far. There’s not a single list of quality about any of the presented characters at all. The dialogue is clunky and unnatural, especially behind the women, although the editing was an interesting decision to have the whole film in the reverse to mimic Leonard’s memory loss. Unfortunately, Leonard is not any different than any other Nolan leading man; white smart, willing to do whatever same old, same old. I’ll wait for a story of Nolan’s where he tries to tackle demographic that isn’t himself in another form maybe a story about maybe a woman or a person of color or literally anyone else would be great. It gets a three stars because I do really like to editing and presentation of this film as well as the plot, but as an actual story, it’s lacking a lot. And this is a problem he never learns from despite this being one of his first films
