barackobama9.9July 27, 2026Grew up watching this movie. I feel very aligned with Kiki, even if (or rather, because) sometimes she’s an huge bitch. Regardless, I learned from her at a young age that difficulties in life are always temporary. Some parts of the movie are a bit hard to watch for me bc they are deeply resonant — isolation, depression, feeling directionless are big themes throughout. But they make the scenes where she connects deeply with the people around her even more meaningful. There is also a beautiful sense of female friendship! Kiki has differing relationships with Osono, Ursula, and Madame, but they share a powerful sense of guidance and empathy. Miyazaki’s films always have amazing girl/women characters
