goldenbrown9.9August 12, 2026Genuinely a heartbreaking film. I was shocked by the David Bowie score. I can’t believe he did this film the same year he did the labyrinth. The characters in this film are so well done and written it’s like I know them in real life. I have met someone like James. I know women like the wife whose name was not clear. putting all the trust in the government, even in times of war like that. It’s clearly that the lucky few were the ones in London, who were the epicenter of the bomb. This is a film about hopeless optimism, blind optimism we slowly watch an elderly British couple who have never retired and I’ve done everything but their government has told them to keep safe die from radiation. They are the last people surrounding themselves. They can even smell the roasting of the bodies around them. The animation is beautiful and explores multiple styles. The house is an actual set whereas the characters items and occasional dream scene seem to be hand animated. Towards the end, there’s beautiful symbolism of the couple getting incredibly sick and deciding to put themselves in bags in case another bomb goes off, putting themselves in body bags and making sure their identification is nearby in case another bomb goes off where they eventually die. Truly, one of the saddest films ever. War is scum and nothing makes me hate it more than hearing about people who have been victims of it. I failed to see the glory and all that suffering.
